A FEARFUL WORLD
“All one’s neighbors are in the grip of some uncontrolled and uncontrollable fear. . . In lunatic asylums it is a well-known fact that patients are far more dangerous when suffering from fear than when moved by rage or hatred.”-Carl Jung, Psychology and Religion
We are in a fearful state. We exist not between positive and negative or light and dark, but between various stages of fear and anxiety. We struggle to move forward, are afraid to look back, and shudder at the thought of remaining still. It seems that all around us are reasons to be afraid.
And these reasons are magnified with each and every passing week.
We fear the past, knowing that we may never be that successful, that happy, or that young again.
We fear the present, knowing that we can only take action in the current moment and this action appears too heavy of a price to pay.
We fear the future, the mystery of tomorrow that is rapidly closing in on us.
We fear the unknown, living in the grip of paranoia that anything could happen to us at any moment.
We fear the oncoming storm, whether it be personal, professional, social or economic.
We fear others, never knowing what they are up to and how their actions could effect us.
We fear our bosses, knowing that a meeting with them is never a good thing.
We fear fate and fortune, unsure of what will happen to us if we continue on our present path.
We fear the beginning, because the beginning is the most difficult part of any endeavor.
We fear the end, not knowing if the result will be to our liking.
We fear failure, unable to cope with rolling the dice and working toward something with nothing to show for it.
We fear success, not believing that we truly deserve the fruits of our efforts.
We fear ourselves, afraid of what we could be truly capable of if we put our minds to something.
Our fears paralyze us. They hold us back from our goals. They prevent us from achieving our dreams. They defeat us before we even begin.
The result?
Many give into these fears. They never fight back. They never seek to combat the feelings that these fears stir up. Ultimately, what people fear most is what others will think of them.
