ROLE MODELS ARE OBSOLETE
"Every age but ours had its model, its ideal. All of these have been given up by our culture; the saint, the hero, the gentleman, the knight, the mystic. About all we have left is the well-adjusted man without problems, a very pale and doubtful substitute."-Abraham Maslow
In the present age, everyone is a brand whether they want to be or not. And these brands are subject to the algorithms of various social media networks. One needs to stand out to gain attention, to trend, to build a serious following. Whether it be for fame or fortune, you aren’t worth anything unless you are seen.
But how?
We are all competing against countless others who are trying to do the same thing. No one has the time, patience, or endurance to put in deep and true work. That is far too high a price. Instead, the easiest and sure-fire way to attract attention is to incite drama, to be scandalous, to one up another. Shame, common sense, and integrity are meaningless when it comes to the dopamine hit and view count. In an attempt to emulate and copy, viewers and followers follow their example and add their own twist to it. Soon everyone is doing a viral dance or partaking in some cringe worthy challenge.
What are we left with?
Crowd sourced conformity of the highest level where everyone acts the same, is the same, and desires the same.
The same dances.
The same language.
The same dreams and desires.
The same jobs and careers.
The same poses at the same locations.
A herd of epic proportions.
“Everyone wants the same; everyone is the same; he who has other sentiments goes voluntarily into the madhouse.”-Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra
However, if you stand out, if you go your own way, if you forge your own path, you will not be looked upon with awe. You may not even be looked upon at all! No one wants to be the first subscriber, the first follower, the first customer, or the first investor of something new, unproven and untested. This is perhaps the greatest difficulty that one faces.
