Welcome to the YouTopian Journey. Each week I will be sharing unique wisdom as well as a more in-depth overview of the artwork that is featured on the Instagram @youtopianjourney. This week we discuss the danger of conformity and why it is essential to remain “younique” in a world that is attempting to constantly change you.
THE THREAT OF CONFORMITY
“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”-George Bernard Shaw
Of all the hazards one may face, of all the dangers that one must contend with, none are more subtle than conformity. It is an omnipresent force. It can be welcomed in with open arms, or creep in at your weakest moments. It is a threat to be reckoned with and if you aren’t careful, it could corrupt you.
But what is conformity? It is the process of matching attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs with politics, groups and or societal norms. It is an insidious threat, often infecting you without you ever realizing it. Simply put, conformity removes your “youniqueness”, replacing it with the safety and acceptance that society offers.
This is never a fair exchange.
Know that our society is made up of automatons, blindly conforming to one set of behaviors after another. Instead of questioning anything, the masses accept. Instead of critical thinking, the masses emulate. Instead of producing, the masses consume. The result? Everything and everyone is the same.
Every picture and pose.
Every person following one another, waiting in the assembly line of conformity, emulating the behavior of everyone else, all in an attempt to revel in their conformity.
This is dangerous and can certainly be fatal to one who is on the path. Especially since some of your closest friends may turn out to be some of your harshest critics. This is enough to stop most in their tracks.
