A TIMID TIME
“Only boldness can deliver from fear. And if the risk is not taken, the meaning of life is somehow violated, and the whole future is condemned to hopeless staleness.”-Carl Jung
A society can be defined by many things. Its people. Its culture and values. Its contributions. More importantly, a society is defined by its behavior.
And what is our behavior?
We are a society of people who rush toward online challenges but flee the challenges of life.
We postpone the responsibilities of adulthood for as long as possible.
We engage in narcissistic behavior over everything and anything else.
We go from fad to fad, trending with everyone else, hoping we don’t miss out on the next big thing.
We are consumerists to the core, purchasing one product after the other.
We are all talk but very little action.
Above all, we are timid, all too timid.
We are timid in the classrooms, where the coddling of the mind is more important than debate and critical thought.
We are timid with our behavior, worrying that our actions may have consequences that are too difficult to endure.
We are timid with our careers, preferring safety over growth each and every time.
We are timid with our thoughts, favoring the safety of conformity rather than the loneliness of individuality.
This epoch of timidity is damaging. Without the ability to take risks, to experiment, we will never learn and grow. Not only will we personally face mental suffering, but our societies will as well.
“Historically some of the most prosperous societies – Ancient Athens, Renaissance Italy, nineteenth-century Britain – were among those that were most oriented towards experimentation and the taking of risks.”-Frank Furedi, How Fear Works
Why is this the case?
Because we are made for action. Life is a battle. Yet the multitude prefer the safety of the sidelines rather than the mud of the trenches. They cling to the shore as land doesn’t sink but boats always do. Embracing timidity is a sure-fire way to stay safe and stay whole. Conforming to the crowd is warm and welcoming. However, it is also a sure-fire way to stay mediocre and empty. Because of this, many hesitate at the moment of action, the moment that can light the bold spark of their new life.
“Taking a new step, uttering a new word, is what people fear most.”-Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment
Failure to take that step results in a timid and conformist existence. Here, there is no way to prosper, no way to succeed, and no way to live a fulfilling and mentally healthy life.
