Now onto the good stuff.
MEANING REQUIRED.
“What I really lack is to be clear in my mind what I am to do, not what I must know…What matters is to find a purpose…to find a truth that is true for me, to find the idea for which I am willing to live and die…This is what my soul thirsts for as the African desert thirsts for water.”- Søren Kierkegaard
We live in an age of anxiety amidst a mental health crisis. Companies are rushing to fill the void. There is a pill for whatever ails you, an APP to help you relax, a service to connect you with a professional that can soothe your soul.
But there is nothing that can provide you with the personal meaning that you can truly call your own.
Of all the necessities required for success in today’s world, none is more difficult to locate nor harder to act on than meaning. Without meaning, nothing will ever be enough. Forging your own path is not enough. Nurturing greatness is not enough. Acting is not enough. These are all mandatory prerequisites, but not the end goal. We must use our inner forces to execute on a life task, some powerful mission that is possible and is within our reach.
But what task?
What should I do?
What must I do?
What do I need to do?
Why am I here?
What am I good at?
What can I do to make a difference?
We are all plagued by these questions. And these questions will not simply vanish. Even if you achieve wealth and the other trappings of success that society places upon you, your mind will still wonder.
And I cannot answer them for you.
No one can.
This can be annoying and downright frustrating. After all, we are living in a world that instantaneously offers us endless information on any topic that we desire. It should be simple to find our meaning by asking Google for it.
It isn’t.
“Ever more people today have the means to live, but no meaning to live for.”-Viktor E. Frankl
Your meaning is your own. It is unique to you. It is up to you to discover it. It cannot be commanded.
Let me repeat this.
It cannot be commanded!
Finding one’s meaning is one of the greatest adventures of life and one of its greatest challenges. It may be a cause of great stress and concern. It may fill you with anxiety and angst. It may not manifest easily and may take years to manifest at all. But it is paramount that you do begin to look as soon as possible.
